another solid outing by them. Not amazing, but really good, more energetic and better produced than memorial as well.

The more I think about it the more I think the mixing has fucked this album over. If any of you have Audacity or similar sound software, open up Vorel and Death Rides A Horse to see the difference.
Guidance doesn't allow any space for songs to breath. What you can't see from Audacity is how clumsily the instruments themselves have been layered; they're the same all the way through. It seems that the band have only been allowed to be LOUD or 'not loud.'
I had a listen to Memorial with this in mind, especially since people seem to be comparing the two (I personally feel this is more like Empros, but hey). Turncrantz's drumming sounds so much more fluid even in songs like Deficit, just because the strikes are allowed to be at different levels.
I think there's a fantastic album buried on the disc, but someone screwed it up just to make it sound HEAVY ALL THE TIME.

The drums are crushed a little too much on this album, I agree. And the first song is way too loud for the kind of song that it is, which sort of kills the album's dynamics right out of the gate. Other than it being over-compressed, though, I think this album has a better representation of bass than Memorial. Deficit, while an awesome song, occasionally feels a little too lacking in bass, at least when the song first kicks in (but you get used to it and it sets a nice atmosphere)... this new album is so far in the other direction that it's almost too bassy, but still I'm glad there is more low-end girth.

Isn't that trademark Kurt as of lately?

I don't know. I haven't heard anything else he's done in the last decade and a half other than Converge's stuff, which generally sounds good imo.

Clockworkrat, there is a very big difference between the loudness of an album and how well it's mixed. I don't agree about the drumming either, because you can really hear how Dave steps on the snare at various points, for example in the outro to Mota. Guidance has an excellent mix, especially the guitars, but like most albums now, is pretty brickwalled. Run Memorial through Audacity and you get virtually the same, except Guidance has more clarity, much cleaner mids than Memorial, and is just a much better production in general imo. Ballou did a great job; he managed to keep things really organic sounding but tighter than the previous two records, and in turn much heavier.
As for the album, it's slowly becoming one of my favourites of theirs, especially the finish of Calla and Lisboa. There's a lot of variety and importantly, a sense of movement.

Finally this takes a slight step down, purely because Dissociation is a thing.

Going through it right now. "Afrika" was impressive.
Edit: Done, man, what a ride. "Calla" was such a punch in the guts. Good stuff.

russian circles sound for my liking peaked at Geneva.Since then Empros memorial and Guidance all have the same theme of heaviness, it will be interesting to see if they follow the same route on their next cd

yo I dunno if anyone's pointed this out yet, but there are really thin, tiny, upside-down letters, I think Roman numerals, across the bottom of this album's art
anyone make out what it says or means?
also this still rules

Russian Circles is really a live band for me, on the record they sometimes sound a bit boring. This one still might be my favorite of theirs, really solid throughout the whole record
