Synths and pop ruined a lot of prog in the 80s but with Rush it feels a lot more like something they progressed into naturally. From using shorter songs on Permanent Waves, adding some synths on Moving Pictures and Signals and then using synths as a major instrument afterwards. And I think this is why even though it's a drop from their classic-era stuff, they definitely did a lot better than other 80s prog-gone-pop. You can still hear their core sound buried under all those electronics.
