Review Summary: "Peacefully gloom"

Kyle Reigle, founder and songwriter of his project, 'Cemeteries', looks to inspirations such as 'The Cranberries' for his latest dream pop record.

What you have with 'Barrow' is nothing new in terms of the genre. On the other hand, what this album lacks in diversity, makes up for in consistency. You can't help but appreciate the almost harmonious tone in this album while it tries to approach its listener with somber intentions. Each track comes in solidly, expressing dark waves of ambience with subtle, yet effective instrumental work. I found myself taking the long route back home one night, seizing the opportunity to truly immerse myself in what was trying to be accomplished here. Verily, 'Procession' being the album's opening track, you quickly capture the essence of what's intended. You might reminisce through old memories, conjuring emotions you packed away until a rainy day. Or you could drift off into a tranquil void , finding certain peace within the soft and melancholy trance that it will ensue. The beauty in Reigle's art truly begins to shine when you hit a little before the halfway mark with the fifth track 'Cicada Howl'. There's an unquestionable sense of despair as Reigle serenades listeners with the words "close your eyes".

Although the use of Reverb and Chorus can be too overbearing at times, it's justified with just how well it actually works, proving that it doesn't hinder the experience as much as it has with other dream pop and shoegaze records in the past. 'Sodus', perhaps the strongest track on the record, boasts some of Reigle's most exceptional songwriting skills. This album climbs at such a steady pace, that you most likely will get lost in it, forgetting that it will unfortunately end. With two albums and one EP under Reigle's belt now, one could say that he's only beginning to find the true nature of his sound. You could also argue that he already has, admitting that he may have some edges to smooth out.

With little variation and more than enough reliance on Reverb and Chorus, the album is held back from its true potential. However, it just goes to show that does little of getting in the way of a mesmerizing experience. Indeed, 'Barrow' will leave you feeling haunted for all the right reasons.
