He needs the upper strings for some lower end rifffaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage.
Yup, Chino is pretty much fully responsible for any discernible 'lead guitar' in recent Deftones. Hearts/Wires lead intro? Chino. Live lead work? Chino. Stephen just handles the chugga chug.

Stephen straight up didn't want to play on this.

He said multiple times throughout the lead up to the release of Gore that he really wasn't feeling the band's new direction. He nearly quit.

I really wouldn't say this is a new direction though ? It's got every deftones trademark you usually get with a slight change of sound of course.

I wouldn't say they were heading in an altogether new direction.
Every release they have done is different imo. This sounds a lot more organic in a way I think.

Wiki:
The album was noted for its creative tension between frontman Chino Moreno and lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, which was described by Rolling Stone as Moreno "playing Morrissey to the guitarist's Meshuggah"
I read about all this before the release of Gore and got excited thinking we'd get another SNW. Obviously we didn't but I still like it.

It's not a massively new direction, no, but from his perspective it was entirely out of his comfort zone and he didn't like it.

Basically any time heavier shit is going down that's likely Stephen's idea. Hopefully the next record gives him more of an input.

The heavy hitters from the two albums before Gore were awesome, so I wouldn't mind that, as long as it won't be way too similar.

Melodic Deftones has almost always been better than heavy Deftones tbh. This album is no exception.

Totally agreed. That's what makes them unique.
There are thousands of bands to go to for just down-tuned riff-fests of albums with not much else happening.

He had a lot of input on the Self-titled album which if you relisten to it now has a lot of guitar riffs on it. It's a very guitar oriented album. Not like super heavy but it has it's moments. But it's overall very riffy. As a longtime fan, though, I'm not a big fan of his current guitar setup. I don't know what happened but ever since 2012 or so the guitar doesn't sound the same. It used to have this visceral quality to it and very sexy and free sounding. But now it sounds super contrived and polished.

tbh this would probably be one of my favourite Deftones albums if it had better production. Some truly beautiful textures on this album.

Yeah this might be my 2nd or 3rd favorite if the production and mixing were better.

For the Stephen Carpenter stuff? Just google any interview with him regarding Gore and you'll probably find something he says about it. He was fairly vocal about it to begin with.

I'm more surprised by the fact that he managed to string a full sentence together
