I'm super excited to finally be seeing this band live in a week. They are one of my favs of all time. However, feelings are a little more mixed then they could be. Omnium Gatherum is opening for Leave's Eyes and Sonata Arctica so they only get 8 songs tops, and they are starting the show with The Pit and Skyline, two of their more average songs. I wish the band would get like 12 songs and would play their classics. I have to assume that the band themselves knows that material they are neglecting on New World Shadows and Beyond is still the best. And I can only hope the band gains some popularity so they can play more complete shows and include the show stoppers "Everfields", "Deep Cold", "Luoto", "The Return", and "Living in Me" It's a long shot tho.

that lovely moment when you find out a band you like not only put out an album this year but that you also already jammed it, liked it, and now get to put it on your AOTY list that you're totally actually going to post this year. ^_^

I have to disagree HARD with some stuff here.... I bought my fist OG cd back in 2004, and this band has manage to stay relevant throughout all these years. You draw comparisons to Insomnium, but hey! Insomnium did steal OG's guitarist a couple of years ago... I see no similarities with this and Scar Symmetry... If anything "skyline" sounds more like IF's "only for the weak"... And name just Amon Amarth song that sounds like "the pit"...
Summary is disappointing too, it seems you're the one that just started listening to melodeath, not trying to be controversial or anything bruv, the review is well written, but it lacks research, all the facts you state are kinda off.
just my 2 cents.
This is solid melodeath.

And "majesty and silence" is the most boring track on this... I think you're missing melodeath's point
It's about melodic riffs and fast catchy beats. "majesty and silence" sounds like DT's "we are the void", and that record sucked, that's when DT stopped being fun melodeath....

The tracklist for the new album is really intriguing, and the release isn't even that far away!
Damn guys, look at the total ratings for each of Omnium's albums. There is some zen synchronicity going on here.

Hawks you have to hear the albums: The Redshift, New World Shadows, and Beyond. If you only listen to one I'd suggest New World Shadows. This latest album Grey Heavens was weaker than the last three so I wouldn't start there. Those last three are mind blowing to me especially New World Shadows and Beyond. All their albums have an incredibly different tone, so it's interesting to hear the progression. Yea I'm huge on these guys. I keep finding reasons to come back to them.
You know this is the main songwriting vehicle of the current lead guitarist of Insomnium, who has been with Insomnium since 2012.

Idk, I like it more than most of Grey Heavens, but I certainly hope the album has more spacious and atmospheric moments as it goes as well.
