Haven't decided if needing to contextualize the album and themes of its presentation against the death of their vocalist is a good or bad thing.

The album feels deeper knowing that, but I wonder if it should still communicate that depth without knowing the individual backstory.

Oh well, still gud

The total lack of a vocalist is convention enough

I don't think you need to contextualize it in any outside manner. The album is all about death, tragic, heroic, etc. It'll set a mood for you without any kind of exterior reference.

Though, like swam song efforts, knowing the background to a release will more often than not make the material stronger. Considering I got into these guys later in their lifespan and after their vocalist passed away, I came in with no context.

This is honestly as generic as post rock gets. All the typical tricks of the trade are displayed here and nothing really distinguishes it from the sea of homogeneity it resides in

I have felt the same since I listened to this from the very beginning. I think people have been whamboozled by the story of the band.

I got into these guys without caring about their story. The content of the album is presented in such a wonderful way. I've heard generic post rock and I don't think this is it.
