Refreshing in the sense it was all brought back to basics. A bunch of dudes in a cabin, bouncing off each other with the -- as always -- stellar dialogue. I just felt the barebones approach to the film made it, but the whole "who did it?" arc was great as well.
I don't really see how this film is pretentious, because you could say that about his whole style of writing and directing since Pulp Fiction. I guess it all depends on preference, and whether you dig his style.

i really like Tarantino, but i really believe he lost it in this one,
this balance between action, style, epic-drama and emotion that made kill bill a masterpiece
and all that is left is a weak back story with 8 characters that only satisfy the director's manic passion for spaghetti western.
Anyway, since the soundtrack is the issue here, i would rate it even lower but i pos at your writing!

Haven't seen the movie yet, but this was very underwhelming listening to it on its own...
Good review man.

fits really well with the movie tbh, haven't listened to this on it's own
really felt it was QT's best in years
|
| |
I hardly noticed the score during the movie and that was disappointing to me.
|
| |
I really feel it enhanced the paranoid and claustrophobic feel of the movie, but it didn't really 'stand out' like that
|

For the most part, if you still notice the score on your first watch after the first ten minutes of the movie, the score isn't doing it's job

pretty much

I actually got given this on vinyl as a present for my birthday, so I gave it another spin and it's actually a little better than I remember it. It's still better when it's working with the film though.

I need to watch the movie again then.

Yeah, the soundtrack isn't exactly jumping out, but it works well with the film.

I know this isn't a movie thread, but I was pretty underwhelmed with the movie as well. So, maybe that's part of my criticism for this. I should probably watch it again AND listen to this separately.

I really can't see the criticism with the film. At this point, if you don't like his film style you won't like Hateful Eight. But what I don't get is when people who like his films but dislike this, because it hits the same beats as all his other ones, only it's a lot more back to basics, which appealed to me most.
But as for the soundtrack, it's grown on me a lot more after a couple more listens. Not Ennio's best, but it's still great.

very late comment as I just saw this movie for the first time last night, but I liked the score quite a bit

What you think of the film?

I thought the movie was pretty great overall! I think I'm gonna have to watch it a 2nd time before I know where I'd rank it with his other movies. Some great acting/dialogue as expected, and loved the atmosphere as well as the the music
Actually on a Tarantino binge rn and rewatching all his movies
