Volahn blows the opposite of fat knobs. Volahn only blows high-class, Patrician, gold-plated dicks.

id rather have people walk into a comment section and insult every person in it than comment 'durr havent listened to this and wont xD' because at least the former is actually interesting sometimes

^ Agreed about Cosby's Altered State vs Polaris comparison. After Nocturne, specifically after the song after Nocturne (the title I already forgot but remarkable for its instrumentation (edit: Exile)), the songs just felt average and forgettable - boring at parts.

I'm going to be brutally honest here, I was sorely disappointed with this album, especially since I really liked Altered State. This isn't to say I'm comparing the two releases however. I realize both albums are different to each other, but I do much prefer the slightly more explosive and prominent nature of Altered State, whereas with Polaris it's almost as if most of the songs have too much build-up. I'll explain myself. I expected the first three songs to amount to something truly bombastic (don't ask me why, it's my weird expectations getting in the way), but instead what I got was something that, whilst still intricate and dynamic enough to please some listeners, simply fizzled out in the end. These songs are too long as well for my liking. What I mean here is that, yes, longer songs do need a bit of time to truly stretch ideas out effectively, but with the likes of "Dystopia" and "Survival", it's almost as if there was one singular idea and nothing else. I mean, the band probably intended for said ideas to be perfect in the end, but it certainly didn't give me that impression.

I'll close by saying this: I think Polaris is too laidback for its own good most of the time. There were some songs that really grabbed my attention ("Phoenix" and "Messenger" namely), but the rest of the album seemed to be on auto-pilot. I feel I've explained myself enough so that the oncoming horde of TesseracT devotees don't try to crucify me, but this is why I rated the album.

After a couple dozen listens, I'm not as 100% enthusiastic, but still love it truly for what it is.

This band is growing and evolving, and hopefully (they're smart people) they'll take the common criticisms to heart while continuing on this sound.

What I mean is, I'm starting to agree with people like linguist2011.

Gorgeously produced & mixed, the instrumentation is world-class, and the songwriting is extremely creative.

But. The melody. I need more bombast and melody next time. This record is comfortable, even confident, in teasing buildups that are atmospheric and very, very pretty, and then not delivering on them. The melody that does rear it's head becomes all the more pronounced, but this leads to a LOT less "wow" moments than, say, Altered State had.

Exceptions are obviously Utopia (who's divisive ending I LOVE) and Tourniquet (A perfect song and my favorite on the album) and Seven Names (God-tier. Absolutely heavenly. Blissful, glittering ambrosia.)

I've said before, and still think (and rationalize criticism with) that this is an "album" album and not a "song" album. If you look at it that way, you've got 95% buildup and then Seven Names brings it all home.

What people were expecting, and what I'd love for them to lean toward for the next album, is a Seven Names every song or every second song. More variety in the riffs, catchier choruses, and more of the ethereal & bittersweet harmonies that we got in Tourniquet and Seven Names.

Have I praised those two enough? The layered harmonies on those two tracks makes the album for me. No, really, go home, smoke a bowl, let it kick in, and listen to that song. It's mind-shattering.

i mean i dont think this is an 'album' album in that sense, i feel perfectly fine skipping tourniquet, cages, messenger and the first 45 seconds of phoenix and can listen to dystopia, hexes, utopia, and seven names individually

both Concealing Fate and Of Matter had much better flow and continuity than the tracks here, and for the first time i feel like theres a dud or two (messenger and maybe cages)

i just think this was a slightly awkward transition back into Dan, who's also adapting to a number of new tactics to utilize in comparison to One days, and i really do think the next one will be a masterpiece

I understand people's disappointment in this but I feel like you get a much more satisfying experience in listening to the album as a whole rather than individual songs.

@toondude10 I agree. I feel like there is definitely a cohesive vibe behind this album and the songs. Sure, the songs don't all meld together like on Altered State but I feel like there are a lot more memorable moments. And while you can listen to them individually it is epic as hell to listen to the whole thing and reach the climax of "Seven Faces".

So this basically sounds like a poor man's Altered State with a different singer. Seriously, some parts sound like they were lifted straight of off Altered State. It's an ok album though.

Altered State was definitely a more thought-out release, but I can see myself listening to Polaris more. I suspect it has something to do with those hooks. I also love that it is kind of laid back, as someone pointed out. I don't know, the record just sounds more natural to me than any of their previous releases.

Strangely, the weak parts in Polaris are actually the times when it tries to channel Altered State.

The acoustic drums make this record sound so much better. I dislike the production of the first 2 albums, it all sounded fake to me. Also, the delayed clean guitars in every fucking song were pretty annoying. Glad they tuned that down
