"Essentially Defeater writes ten to eleven (AKA a hardcore's dozen) eerily similar songs and then slaps together a narrative to tie them all together."
well that's certainly not true on their debut and lost ground and like you said the narrative feels a lot fresher in those albums
|
| |
^not even true for EDSN which is pretty varied despite being somewhat below travels and lost ground in quality

yeah it definitely doesn't sound same-y either. that's where the narrative starts to feel a bit recycled tho

Lost Ground and Empty Days are less samey, but come on it's still a bunch of similar melocore songs, minus the acoustic bonus tracks but those don't really count

melocore as a genre tends to sound rather monotonous but i don't feel the songs are too similar to each other in their earlier days

I love this review

I really like the first two albums but I haven't hard them in a long time
|

Their past three releases have turned me off from ever having the desire to listen to Travels or Lost Ground

Yikes.

i'd pos this if I could

Glad I started with their first three albums instead of these last two, otherwise I'd probably be tempted not to check their earlier stuff too. Haven't even listened to this yet.

"Not only does this tired gimmick make for a boring 5th release, it retrospectively undervalues the first couple of records that seemed fresh at the time because the trick has been revealed and the gig is up."
can someone pls tell this to fans of the wonder years too, thx.

I don't get how you couldn't love The Wonder Years. Their last album was flawless, poetic, and heartfelt and their new album is looking to be even more so.

All their songs are cranked up to 10 like woahhhhhhhhh energy and it's fucking exhausting
The every song is an anthem thing pisses me off, you need to have valleys to have peaks if you know what I'm saying
I don't know I'll write a review for the new one and piss everyone off
|

I have enjoyed your review.
Pretty much sums up how I feel, still love Travels though.

Just so everyone knows, the family dog joke was made by Defeater themselves. And seriously, how could you say The Wonder Years don't embody progression? Each album has been a clear progression from the last. Sputnik would agree too, 4, 4.1, 4.2, maybe this one's a 4.3. But I can sort of agree about your review of this album. They used to write actual, meaty lyrics. Now it's just, "5 vague words" (instrumental bit) "5 more vague words about hating life" (another instrumental bit). However, Travels, LG, and EDSN will not be lowered in my mind. You have to look at the art for what it is, focus a little more on structuralism.
