Much as I love country I have to agree, the worst country drawls are simply atrocious.

This is nice but I don't get a lot more than that, prefer the Truckers output by a wide margin if i'm honest.

The hyperbolic, "we-country-harder-than-anyone-ever-countried" drawls I'd be subjected to if I had no choice but to suffer country radio were part of why I didn't bother with country for such a long time.

Then the Truckers happened. Then Lucinda Williams. Then this. Then Sturgill. Now the question is where to go next... Wilco, Being There?

I love the Truckers to death and while Decoration Day is also a classic, this beats out anything the DBTs have done, imo. DBTs evoke emotion well at times too but the sheer raw emotion here is unmatched in all of their output.

Dylan, Being There is a amazing for sure so you really can't go wrong there. It doesn't pack quite the same emotional punch as this, Williams, or Sturgill, but it's high quality stuff.

A great choice. Or heartbreaker by Ryan Adams maybe.

The CD arrived today, massively falling in love with this. Give it a few months I'll be strutting around town in a Stetson, bootlace necklace, denim and cowboy boots.

Pretty much yeah (I actually prefer Car Wheels on a Gravel Road as a country album though)

Glad to see someone else who thinks this is as special as I do. :-D

I need to give Gravel Road another go. It just seemed a bit too sheryl crow for my ears, but if it's the bones fave album I must be missing something.

It's more "country" than this for sure and it has a different sort of emotional impact. The musicianship on it is impeccable and her singing on it is just perfect, nuanced and heartfelt. I struggle to think of many albums that are as consistently amazing song for song.

And the sand that they call cocaine costs you twice as much as gold

You'd be better off to drink your coffee black

But I swear, the land, it listened to the stories that we told

God bless the busted boat that brings us back

Live Oak is so good lyrically

"And the jealous innuendos of the lonely-hearted men

Let me know what kind of country I was sleeping in"

Like it's not the deepest or saddest line like a lot of others in this thread but it just so perfectly and (for lack of a better word) lyrically paints such a clear picture of the scene.

^ That's the real genius of this album. I daresay there isn't a wasted word in the entire thing (ok, except, maybe, in Super 8).

Even Songs That She Sang In the Shower and New South Wales, which I once thought were somewhat slight compared to most of the others here, have grown and grown over time; in fact, New South Wales is one of the songs that comes into my head the most.
