The Age of Adz is so different from his others that it makes sense some would find it his best. I really like it but find his others better, besides the first two which I haven't jammed.

Right on neeka
Deja Entendu album art is great. Sowing's av might be better.
I tried jamming Sufjan Steven's first two and some of his EPs on multiple occasions, but couldn't get into them. What I heard from All Delighted People was really good. The Xmas albums he did are great too.

Yeah people tend to ignore the fact that multiple songs here (Fourth of July, John My Beloved, and My Blue Bucket of Gold; which together comprise a third of the album's runtime!) are far more in line with ambient pop than they are with indie folk, and several other songs have elements of ambient and electronic as well. For me those aspect are part of what makes this really stand out; it's far more than Sufjan just crying over some random acoustic strumming.

If this is pop then it's probably the most depressing pop I've ever heard

Well, pop in the strictest sense of the term.

most music we listen to here are technically subgenres of pop. Especially if singing is involved.
i.e. Rock is pop with more abrasive sounding instrumentation and composition, folk is pop with a focus on pastoral instrumentation like acoustic guitars, electronic is just pop with synthesizers, etc.

Nateman I wouldn't state it quite that broadly (especially not for electronic), yes a lot of rock is basically pop, same goes width a lot of folk and a lot of electronic but that's far from a broad trait that applies to everything in those genres.
But indeed as far as folk goes this is - again, in the strictest sense of the term - very poppy.
