Yeah I've never liked his other albums but this one is somehow different.

Illinois is his best album so idk

This is the only one of his albums with real 'emotional connect' for me. Other stuff is consistently impressive and sprinkled with emotional hitters but not quite like this. he also just somehow sounds at home/at perfect ease on this one, again I'm not sure if that's the same for everyone...

Well it's probably because this one is his most direct

Being this direct definitely suited him here imo - made me see him in a new light/consider him more seriously.

I still really enjoy Illinois though, as unwieldy as it is

I'd almost consider this like a return to roots album for him. Age of Adz was so experimental and off the wall, with the death of his Mom I guess reflection causes you to go back in time not only to your past memories but to when you first picked up a guitar, and there is something pure about being able to say and express so much emotion with only your voice and an acoustic guitar.

the proof for me that this is better than Illinois is that everyone I've introduced to that one after hearing this has said the songwriting isn't at the same level as Carrie & Lowell

C&L is him pouring out his soul, he clearly cared more about this record than any other one he's made and it's obvious in the final product. As he was quoted, "this isn't an art project, it's my life."

If he has anything better than this I'm not even sure I want to hear it--took me a year to get over this one, lol.
