Slut Charmer is a punk/garage rock project by Daniel Wood, a creative New Yorker with a penchant for blasphemy, sacrilege and creating as much outrage as possible. One of the masterminds behind the notorious website Lolokaust.com and a man of many talents, Dan likes to vent his twisted creative energies on many fields, one of which is rock music.
Slut Charmer is one of those projects you can't help but smile when listening to, if garage rock with cough... insightful lyrics is your thing. As the name suggests, the lyrics revolve mainly around making love to women, having sex with girls and let's not forget boning chicks - while this subject matter is ubiquitous, it is so tastefully rendered that it doesn't feel forced, not to mention that some songs do stray from these topics a little bit, or at least don't make them their primary focus.
The music itself is an energetic blend of punk rock chord progressions and flamboyant rock and roll dynamics, all enhanced by Dan's frantic vocal delivery consisting of noisy, mid to high pitched, juvenile rock singing, as well as soaring falsettos, both styles fitting the music perfectly and finding use in many niches. In addition, one can find compelling ballads, such as Bad Bitch or Nuff Luv to mix things up. The songs never outstay their welcome, which was deliberate on the composer's part to provide bite-sized sonic morsels for the listener, and the track configuration ensures that the 30-minute long outing won't get boring.
Standout tracks have to be "***ed on Drugs", with its emotional and infectiously catchy chorus, "Convulsions", a mellow song about doing heroin and "Size Queen", a song that gives you a very good idea of all the best things Slut Charmer is about. The narrated interlude "Stand Solo", in addition to the ballads, keeps things interesting. Still, being brief as it is, there is no incentive to skip any tracks along the way -
Slut Charmer works well as an entirety.
Overall, if outrageous lyrics are your thing and if your ear likes classic garage rock with a punky tint, definitely give Slut Charmer a chance, you won't be disappointed.
