Fantastic album. Not quite as good as Crane Wife, but geez it's close.

You know, Crane Wife has never really been my favorite. The best songs there are better than on this, but I find Crane Wife too varied to listen to all at once.

This is easily their most digestible album.

I might give that to King is Dead, personally

Crane Wife was a tough grower for me, but Hazards blew me way from the first listen. It was the first album of them I listened and it gave me a wrong impression of the band as it was some kind of anomaly in their discog. This is indeed very digestible but I really would like to see them return to their more progressive side. Hazards is very underrated now but I'm pretty sure will be very well regarded in the future.

Thank god, someone else who loves Hazards! Your 5 is a bit high for me, but I find it a very very solid 4.5. It is seriously underappreciated. Easily one of the best rock operas ever.

The Wanting Comes in Waves is their best song, but Hazards isn't their best album. Crane Wife takes my top spot.

When it was realeased I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw all that hate. Then I listened the rest of their discog and understood the complaints, it was way too far from the safe zone their fans were accustomed to. Even if Crane Wife hinted at that, the leap was too big.

The King is Dead takes my top spot because of how beautifully and impeccably crafted it is, as well as the wealth of emotion it possesses and its authenticity. While I adore The Decemberists, sometimes their stuff sounds so overwrought. In my opinion, The Crane Wife doesn't quite stand up to their best because of the variety of styles and themes it covers. Individually, those songs mostly rule (with the exception of "The Perfect Crime No. 2"), but together they don't work as well.

Honestly the only Decemberists album that ever gets old is Her Majesty.
