Haha, thats ridiculous. Yeah its not like 'oh god this is awful,' but particularly in the last few tracks when the songs get real busy the production gets really grating.
I suppose at least its good they're getting such a devoted following...;]

Yea I know haha though the more I listened the more I was able to look past it. However, I'd never deny that it still have technically poor production. And yea they have lots of die hard fans for sure. They communicate directly with us quite often on fb, they're genuine and funny people who clearly work hard at what they do xD

I definitely like this; it's at least a 4, but I can't get into it when it sounds so flat.
It's very compressed, it clips hard, it's severely lacking in low-frequency information (below 100 Hz), there's too much presence in the 200-1000Hz range (causes syrupy and congested-sounding vocals), and the higher frequencies start to roll off too soon, though it does extend to 20 kHz, which is good, and which means that it can be saved with EQ.
As for an example of something that has great production and EQ...well...I could pick a lot of examples, but The Butterfly Effect's "Final Conversation of Kings" has pretty solid production.

^i checked that butterfly effect album out and i liked it a lot. The album that comes to mind when i think of perfect production/mixing/eq is Sound Awake by Karnivool

The producer of Sound Awake did wonders on 90% of his work.
Well, I didn't remember his name so I googled it and discovered he's the same guy on that the butterfly effect disc mentioned.
I also remember he did Skyharbor's sophomore and the last Animals as Leaders which was tight as fuck compared to their first two discs. He's great at what he does.

They can't even tour in the states because of no money, they can't obviously splurge 20.000 $ into the mastering.

Sound Awake does have good production. A little dry (not enough high frequency presence), but still very good. Themata's production is just as good, maybe better. It's just the opposite, though; it's not quite dry enough.

Yeah, I agree that Sound Awake can sound a little dry. I definately prefer Themata's production. Whole album just sounds colossal

As I mentioned before, the only part of the mix that really hurts the record is the drums.

the guitarist of this band deserves just as much praise as the singer in my opinion

Album Rating: 4.0
oh yeah the guitarist is great. that is why like ive said before i kinda wish the singer would, well, stop singing sometimes and let the rest of the band shine. there are so many great guitar parts for example that get buried under the vocals and overlooked.
i do love that heavy, kinda limping riff that comes in in Dark Charade particularly

i think they make a great combo. Not to mention he writes great lyrics.
and yeah that part in Dark charade is one of my favorite moments of the album.

I think they all write the lyrics together. And yea I definitely again that Drew should stop singing sometimes, but I can overlook it because he's So. Fucking. Good.

If you guys listen to the ghost apparatus demos, the lyrics were already written so I guess Drew at least on those songs had no impact neither in the songwriting nor in the lyrical content (dark charade, dead rope machine, winslow) and the vocal lines are 99% the same.

and the guitar player is a horrifying singer, if Drew hadn't come back this would have been a disaster

hmm i didn't know the guitarist at least attempted to sing, that actually makes me respect him more. but yeah they probably would've sucked without drew, he's like their key element and selling point along with the guitarist's weird riffs.
