yeah Put A Spell is great too. i tend to prefer her stuff without strings. she's a great pianist. this, Wild Is The Wind and Sings The Blues are all amazing but I haven't heard a dud from her yet

I haven't got Sings the Blues but I do have Little Blue Girl which has some crackers on it too.

yeah another good one! no one quite like her, before or after. this incredible mix of jazz, soul and folk. and very very few people were writing songs like Four Women back then, addressing subjects like that so directly.

Indeed. Same case with Strange Fruit on this album. Not easy for a black woman to write and perform such stuff back then.

Strange Fruit is devastating

definitely. that one is even more remarkable cos Billie Holiday did that decades earlier. i always thought that relied more on metaphors while Nina went more direct but it's pretty clear cut too.

And the funny thing is that I watched an interview of Nina Simone the other day and she said she wasn't a big fan of Holiday's voice.

Strange Fruit is a poem first published back in 1937 by a school teacher named Abel Meeropol. Holiday performed and recorded it a couple of years later.

Edit: In fact, the majority of Holiday’s and Simone’s repertoire was not written or composed by them.

Thanks for the info Doc. Writing that poem and later on singing the song was pretty heroic for that time.

Heroic indeed, in contrast with those promoting apples or apples promoting 'em or front page full of reviews for it.

I just listened to it a week ago and the album is just brilliant; so is your review manos, one of your best

ones I'd say. Nina needs more love on here.
