I get that, but Watershed has this creepy, greenish feel or something that makes it sound pretty distinct from their others imo
The metal sections and progressive rock ones are balanced in a similar way between GR and WS though, in a way that most of their others aren't.

agreed watershed has a creepy wibe to it that is pretty unique in their discog

It's their most twisted and schizophrenic for sure, due to its inpredictability for the most part. But GR and WS definitely form the most balanced era of their discography.

And this has a better average than The Heritage, why? It hadn't even finished & I was 'checking my watch'... this feels like a chore to listen to, doubt I ever will again. Boring.

I think the lower average for Heritage is more a reflection of fans being shocked and dismayed by the change in direction rather than it's comparative quality.

You're probably right, although I'm coming to their discography late & I'd heard a load of their material pre-Heritage first I still knew (kind of) what to expect. There's no doubt in my mind it's superior to this though, at least that one had interesting ideas & a 'soul' both of which seem completely absent here.

Actually this album doesn't deserve 2's or 1,5's. Sure, prefer older opeth but this has some jamz, of the opeth post watershed album this is the best one

eternal rains is my favorite post-watershed opeth song. I love the melodies and the drumming is just spectacular. that little middle-eastern-ish riff in the end is also cool, and sets the tone for cusp for eternity (which sadly turns into bit of a snore fest). few more great songs, some epic moments here and there.. heritage is better, but sorceress didn't grab me at all, can't even remember anything off of that album.

I don't generally have the same taste as Sowing but man his review was spot-on, all that needed to be said... meandering, derivative 70s prog indeed.

I only like the song Eternal Rains Will Come. To me that's the only song that makes me feel anything. The beginning of it is kind of lame but when it kicks in it's really great. Mikael actually sounds sad on the chorus. Which is rare with this new material.

I like the beginning too, mostly because of the drumming tho

The drumming during the intro of Eternal Rains is so good.

Agreed.
It does feature Mike’s only vocal blunder tho, he’s painfully off pitch during the intro of Moon Above.
