I like this record because I like prog, however I do wish Opeth to return their previous style. Great review, btw.

If this were another band, this would be a higher score. However, Opeth's greatest strength has always been in balancing extremes. They are kings of dynamics, and because of that, their soft parts a more serene and their more aggressive parts hit harder.

This album is simply bland. It's boring. Technically, it's still good, but it lacks personality, and both Steve Wilson and Riverside made this transition far more gracefully.

Wait, when did steven wilson make a transition from metal to prog?

I absolutely love older Opeth. Ghost Reveries is a favorite of mine. Heritage was alright, but

that's it. Pale Communion has great songs and a much better production. I dig it.

If Heritage was a transitional album leading to this new sound, I am more than fine with it.

This has grown off of me quite a bit this last week.

"There's just a sad sense of gothic magic that's had its black candlelight flame blown out by a hippie's bong smoke pervading the album."

Too. Right. You've said it all perfectly. Can't forge ahead while "paying homage" to such a dated style. Again, well said.

It's going to be interesting to see where they go from here. Suffice to say whatever they do will polarise anyway

I hope they continue to develop the more ''own'' sound that this album started to develop.

Good review, but I don't dig the summary very much. Love these last two Htepo records.
