Review Summary: With abrasive, textured synth melodies and wandering vocals, Chris Lopez's second extended play is both a satisfying and enjoyable experience.
Chemistry is one of the best dream pop EPs of 2014, and that's a fact. While Chris Lopez's debut EP,
Feel Good, focused mostly on quiet guitar patterns,
Chemistry focuses on electronics, and uses them to create beautiful sonic landscapes that drifts you away as you listen.
Throughout the 26-minute record, you are ambushed by abrasive synths and layers apon layers of textured tones and melodies. Lopez's vocals, for the most part, echo throughout each track, usually being absorbed by all of the wandering synth lines. However, while most of the record keeps your attention, the ending does not. The last track, "Soma", is an instrumental, and a dull one at that. The drum pattern at the very beginning stays the same way to the end with very little build up, and not much is added to the track.
In the end, however,
Chemistry still stands out as one of the better dream pop EPs of 2014. With abrasive, textured synth melodies and wandering vocals, Chris Lopez's second extended play is both a satisfying and enjoyable experience.
