yea justice fuck I can't type today

but yes I don't doubt the influence of this. but it's when they started already watering down their sound on a larger scale (lightning had fade yea but that's like a half song of soft). then cliff died and they mixed that with straight up rage which was justice, which rules. I don't know this was always kinda borderline for me

I wouldn't say they were watering down their sound as much as simply expanding upon it. They didn't want to stay completely thrashy forever so they added more complex pieces and a heavier overall sound

Maybe it's because it was one of the first metal albums (if not THE first) I ever bought, but this is and always will be a classic to me. This is the one where they fully refined their sound. Their other '80s material is still outstanding, but this one is perfection. There's no choppy transitions in songwriting, an excellent variety of pace and dynamics, fascinating lyrical themes, and of course, top notch musicianship.
Don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to this.

I actually used to really dislike this album, but I think it was more from its "OMG BEST ALBUM IN HISTORY" status than on its own merits. Anyway, I love it now... and just old Metallica in general

The endless nostalgia from these albums aside, objectively this and justice are probably their best written and tied for best metallica album for me, with Lightning at a close 2nd from how fast and crushing it remains while improving on what they did on Kill 'Em All

Disposable Heroes is still my favorite on here, so underrated when compared to Battery or the title track, or Orion
