Review Summary: From Ashes To New's self-titled EP has some hits, but mostly misses in their genre, originality, and quality.
When I listen to music, I can find myself usually thinking “this is good”, “this is bad”, “this is awful”, or “interesting”. From Ashes To New found me thinking “interesting” because of the genre they attempt to emulate and the sound they produce. Their debut self-titled EP was nothing spectacular but you could take it or leave it.
With only five tracks you can’t exactly judge to a precise degree of quality or originality. But when listening to this EP you can hear them horribly attempting to mimic certain sounds from other alternative rap-rock bands are more known for such as Linkin Park. Bringing a rapper and a singer this band is more or less out for kicks of being known as the new Linkin Park than having their own original style.
Listening to any of the tracks they can be perceived as somewhat “whiny” especially the track, Stay This Way. Attempting to make a “get out of my face” and “I’ll be who I want to be” song. To add an additional complaint, both the rapper and singer’s vocals surrounded are by electronica and synthesizers. I will give the band credit for having “okay” rapping and vocals. Considering when listening you can notice that their voices aren’t completely covered by the electronic autotune sound. I will also give the rapper credit for being more creative with his raps than more mainstream rappers such as Lil’ Wayne or 2Chainz though in a partially different genre.
Due to this EP having both decent factors and terrible factors there is no way to grade precisely but as average in my personal opinion but do let this warp your own opinion.
