I loved Cormorant's first album because it was diverse and fun... I haven't liked anything outside of that record, though. I don't really know why.
Pedro Pedro Pedro we've been oer this Thou is doom not black metal :3 I've heard everything else sans Obsequiae, so I'm going to put that on my list.

"we've been oer this Thou is doom not black metal"
blackened doom, whatever. it's close enough for me. Obsequiae is all about the Renaissance vibes, pretty cool stuff.

and before I get called out on Obsequiae being 2011, they signed to a new label this year which re-released it (including on vinyl)

Lord Mantis is another one that flirts with black metal but also has sludge and Godflesh-esque industrial. That would be near the top too.

I've tried that album but I just don't get it (sorry Wiz!).

Alaskan gets my AOTY so far, but that's sludge/post-metal. Would make a great double feature with this though.

That new EP by Svartidaudi, if it matches the quality of Flesh cathedral, will easily be best black metal of the year.
Now If only I could get my hands on that EP.

this thread is splendid. will check whatever I haven't yet checked out (that new Alaskan sounds promising). must agree with the opinion that the new Coromant really isn't all that impressive. it just didn't fly well with me, didn't find it compelling at all. Paramnesia was hella sweet though, I can jive with that.

I think it took a really long time (read: years) for Forgotten Spell's Desecrated, Decayed and Still Holy demo to hit the interwebs in an accessible form. For stupidly obscure releases like this it can take a while for anyone to get the good sense to either stream the damn thing officially, or upload it and share it with a blog or two.

I want to thank all of you guys above for keeping me in the loop with new bm releases.

New Lord Mantis is so dirty and disgusting and really takes bm by the testicles and nails them to a decaying fetus. If you don't like your music that sickening, than it will not appear on your AOTY list. It's still my top album this year but fucking shit, new Sun Worship has been playing non-stop for the past several weeks.

This album is massive in sound and scope.
Really great to see them living up to some of their earlier potential

"The Ascend" is a spot on description of how the bm plays out on that song. My favourite track on here by far.
|
| |
Wizard, I agree. That song is great.
Also finishing with the monolithic "Behind the Mountains" is a fantastic way to end the album

I love The Ascend. It's always great when a band is skilled enough to pull of a 6-minute slab of constant blasting. Monarque did that last year with the first five minutes of "Mes Condoléances."
