I neg voted so I shall explain my case.
It's a plain wretched album. The guitars & drums are awful throughout. Metallica wasn't great ever, but had a few good tunes.
Lars did blast beats? Please......... I know this is a matter of opinion on the St. Anger intro but it's not "intense", for me at least. It was something I was able to figure out by ear when I had played for 6 months or so.
The one decent song on the album you rated the lowest??? (Sweet Amber).
In closing,
The guitars, Bass(thanks bob!) were awful.
I think the worst was the tin can drumming though. It sounded like little kids banging on pots & pans.
The vocals were off key & painful to listen to, the whole album.
Review wise: I thought it was factually laughable. It struck me as very fanboyish. It didn't describe the sound very well nor the album very well. IMO. Thus I must neg vote.

I know, it's the truth. It was needed, I can express my opinion. Your comment is rather useless, considering it had nothing to do with this album.
vheissu: Unearth has some good solos & leads but they aren't metalheads. It's metalcore. This Message Edited On 04.12.06

It was good to see someone had the balls (rather the insanity) to write a review in direct conflict with what 99% of the site's users thought.
In terms of the enjoyment I got out of the album, I'm on your side, pal. But still - you're an idiot.

You can tell how half-arsed this album is. They wanted a raw and fuller sound, so they brought in the saucepans and drop D'd the guitars. This to me just spells lazy, as they didn't even have to play powerchords.

Man, to me, this album atleast deserves a 3.
Maybe a 2.5..... whatever...
The Unnamed feeling and st. anger are probably the best songs on it.

IMO this is one of those albums that you just have to be in the mood to listen to. i give it a 2.5/5

To Man Made God:
1. People in metalcore bands aren't metal heads? Look at the root word: metal. When someone is called a metalhead, they are usually referring to a big fan of metal anyway (for vheissu)
2. You obviously like Nile. If someone isn't as good as George Kollias, it doesn't mean they are bad. His drumming on this album was, of course, not as good as his past efforts, but being a good drummer doesn't mean being as good as you can all of the time. His drumming suits the songs, he isn't trying to showboat, etc. I wouldn't say he was awful (minus the prod.).
Umm. I've never heard anyone into "Core" called a metalhead. Secondly metalcore isn't real metal. There are some very talented bands within the mostly average genre though. Unearth being one of the great bands within it.
I wasn't comparing Lars to Kollias. I don't compare any & every drummer against him. I decided my thoughts based on listening to the music of said band.
Even Lars has said he's a bad drummer and coming from someone like him, that means a lot.
PS: I don't take Nu Metal fanboys seriously. This Message Edited On 04.12.06

People who are into metalcore are usually metalheads, i thought that was common sense.
And metallica has had a huge influence on metalcore bands but many others besides metalcore bands as well.

MetallicaBowler I like your review, and in all honesty I agree. St Anger was bashed far too much, yeah James's vocals went off key badly in Sweet Amber and yeah Lars's snare sounds too tinny, but for starters, we've got lead singers who scream and have real bad voices (Cradle of Filth, Slipknot etc) to which I prefer out of key singing and also its just like the boys trying to try something new, it was a good attempt honestly

James can sing better than he did on this album. And Dani Filth is an awesome singer but you just have to be a fan of that kind of metal.

Metalcore is definetly "real metal" are you trying to honestly say that bands like Killswitchengage and All that Remains aren't "real metal"? Also i'm pretty sure Nu-metal has been dead for a couple years now. This album is definetly Metallica's worst btw. This Message Edited On 04.14.06

to the matey who prefers this to Black album, How can you say this is an improvement on songs such as 'Nothing Else Matters', 'Don't tread on me' and 'Sad but True'? I'm not taking the piss I would just like to here it justified.

I just changed my rating of this album from a 2 to a 3, after serious thought after reading this review. Its definitely a total change from Load/Reload, and songs like Sweet Amber, Shoot Me Again, and All Within My Hands have definitely grown on me and i find them, along with St. Anger, to be appealing to me. the rest of this album is average or sucks balls.

I do respect the fact metallica went out and tried something new it didnt really work for them but i still respect that. However I do not think this album diserves a 4/5 more like 3/5 tops. But this is still a good review
