you guys are really high on this eh? to each their own, i just don't personally like it much. it would have sounded cool like 30 years ago, unless they're going for that old 'we can't afford good production' sound or if mediocre production is somehow integral to their sound. it sounds like a 3-day-old can of coke tastes: flat

just because it isnt compressed and have shit tons of eq doesnt mean its flat, its way more natural sounding than most modern dm

i do find the vocals a little too reverbed though, i know what they were going for but they kinda over did it

a lot of the dm i listen to doesn't have the best production (mostly due to when it came out), and i'm not saying it should. some of my favourite albums ever have mediocre production but it actually enhances the listening experience because there are cool underlying subtleties and such. i don't hear that here. it's obvious they made an aesthetic choice to make it sound like this, and it sounds more just for the sake of it than anything, like paying tribute to an older sound. at any rate, it doesn't engage me much, and i can't help feeling like this could sound so much better

yea of course it was a choice and i think its better for it, if this had triggers and squashed dynamics i definitely wouldnt dig it as much. it kind of reminds me of the old morrisound production, it actually sounds like a band playing in a room and not a compressed wall of sound with sibilance and clipping all over the shop

a band playing in a room =/= something that translates well to record imo. it's a good way of putting it though, because it sounds exactly like some guys got together in a room and just started recording their jam sessions and decided not to tweak it much at all. i think words like 'natural' are grossly misused in the context of music, because it implies that it's inherently better for not being laboured over and fed through computers. it isn't better for being rawer, and it doesn't lend any more artistic credibility or what have you. to each their own though. like i said before, i don't get crazy critical of production value in music, and i can see why people would like that kind of sound. it's almost nostalgic. it just isn't my thing atm. might come back to it and try again though, you never know

i didnt mean to say it was their recording technique just that it sounds like i'm listening to a real band playing through my speakers and not some hyper compressed gated necrofagist shite. i really couldnt imagine a record with riffs as demented as this sounding nearly as good with typical dm production but who knows!
