Is it really though? Aside from the overly optimistic tone there's really only slight deviations in his blueprint. He's played around with musical melody before and his usual analogue tape hiss and vinyl crackle is ever present. Aside from that rather obvious segment in 'Hiders' there really isn't as much of an upheaval as many are claiming

i agree but to different means
this is just a watering down of his sound with ideas that dont mesh or work with the palette he already has available
it honestly would have been better had his basic sound changed more

People shitting on Burial because another classic record and anti-hype Sputnik machine starts churning out mediocre reviews.
Dev saves the day.
Thank you based Dev for the proper review.

You've never seen an artifact differently because of knowledge you learned about it/from it? Enjoyed it in a new light? I would be a terrible critic if my subsequent engagements with an album all fell within the shadow of some arbitrary/profound period I first heard it. This isn't even necessarily just about Rival Dealer (but his musical choices are fuck-you objectively not lacking, my goodness the splendor) but please do not let this limited thinking affect your capabilities as a listener.
I did, definitely. But see, thing is with this EP, although I find the ideas he's putting forth through his choice of samples interesting and even to some extent important - they do make for great discussion and thought material - I don't find the music backing it very good. Like Dev said on the previous page, and I also noted it on my review: it's not the big style change people make it up to be, he's still using the vinyl crackle and "Love you" emotional samples sprayed all over his tunes. And tbf, I'm growing a bit tired of it...
tl;dr: The thing I'm arguing here with this EP that important statements do not equal great music and vice versa.
