Shame they didnt pull a kayo dot and whip out something that matches their best work in 2013.. Still slightly above average though

You'd imagine that the first album bearing their band's name in over 20 years would be something unique and special, which I kind of hoped for.

It's still solid though.

As tepid as Dream Theater releases have been for the last ten years, the epics have usually been the
saving graces of their respective albums. I couldn't even muster excitement for Illumination Theory
here, no matter how hard my younger-self wanted to.

The guys said this is the album that represents the band perfectly, and so it has to be the best album

That only means they're too comfy at their current spot in their career to try anything beyond what is typical for them.

This still rules imo. It's far less "safe" than their last few releases but it does take a few more listens to realise. The band were intentionally going for a more streamlined sound. I don't know why people keep expecting them to reinvent the wheel every time, they're far more varied than the majority of bands out there.

'they're far more varied than the majority of bands out there.'

I remember when I used to think that. Good times

I mean, if people want a "safe" DT album, look at Black Clouds...
