Weakest link is LaBrie, no offense to the man, but that's been generally accepted since Scenes.

Dream Theater's musicians are going to continue this repetition if they continue to release giant
tracks with excessive noodliness, and release albums bi-yearly. Rudess is highly skilled, even if his
typical approach is to play random scales in between the notes/chords required for a melody.

"He has quite a lot of presence on TOT but his parts are more interesting."

Yeah I agree with you on this.

"Weakest link is LaBrie"

No dude, he's awesome. Especially on Awake and before he f'ed up his vox.

Remember this fucking shit?!!!! This version has JR higher in the mix so you can hear his tasty parts.
The circus sounds are very very good here. Fucking love the melody at 3:46 and the fucking piano solo
at 4:21 is so fucking delicious.

He should use effects of a higher quality though, some sound very basic.

He also rocks the section at 5:23, especially the haunting tones at 5:51, so damn good but unfortunately so low in the mix on tot

I personally think Jordan is the band's weakest link. By miles. For example, at 4:00 of even their single, The Enemy Inside, there's a really cool bridge, only to be ruined by Jordan's clowny keyboards at 4:45. I mean, I was really getting into the bridge and Jordan just destroys the mood with his stupid keyboard parts. And that's just only one song. He keeps trying to prove there's a keyboard player in the band when it's completely unnecessary to do that.

Agreed. I haven't liked Rudess' contributions since Scenes, he had some really good moments on that album (as well as a few really bad moments). I don't have that much of a problem with Labrie, if they changed vocalist now I think it would probably have a detrimental effect on the band, whereas I think they would benefit from ditching Rudess and bringing in a more creative and tasteful keyboard player.

Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian were both vastly superior to Rudess, perhaps not technically but they were much more tasteful and actually added something to the band rather than just contributing to the wank.

^Agreed hard. DT must reevaluate their approach towards creating music that means something rather than just playing advanced stuff.

"Illumination Theory" is great. If it wasn't for that track, the album would end up being worse than the previous one.

Also, agreed with what has been about Rudess's contribution. Without having heard much of his work
with DT, his playing seems at times completely soulless.

For over a decade DT have basically been a band you listen to, to hear complex stuff rather than for actual musical enjoyment.

JR gets a lot of undue hate imo, yes he does go overboard at time but most of his contributions are good, he's just kept so low in the mix for most of the song ecept the wank sections. Keyboards are one area where DT haven't had any problems. Now everyone's boring. JR had the most interesting parts on ADTOE

Interesting perhaps but not particularly enjoyable. I really don't like Ruddess' playing on anything after 6 Degrees (he was ok on that album but not as good as on Scenes) and he is definitely their weakest link for me despite his obvious talent.

I can't really get into Labrie at all which makes it super hard for me to even finish a DT album
