I surely like this album and consider it Death's most emotive and introspective one but I have a few complaints.
For example, I find the song structure kind of uninteresting. If you notice each song is just repeated twice with no variations.
Secondly, I kind of agree with what Dommie tried to say. Some songs sound incoherent. They mostly sound like riffs played next to each other and not flow from one onto another (hope you understand what I mean)
In the end, I think TSOP lacks the energy previous Death releases had. Hard to define but still I sense that something's missing.
As for the vocal change, I hated it at first but it gradually grew on me. Now I think high pitched vocals were ideal for this material. Chuck was not growling, he was somehow singing and this gave him the flexibility he needed.This Message Edited On 04.17.06

Totally overrated album. I thought the 'happy' death metal of ITP and Symbolic were bad but this is just a compendium of thrown together riffs and bad vocals. Skill over songwriting.

Interesting review, the only thing I could add is that I've heard people say that the Painkiller cover wasn't the best decision for a closer here, which I really can't dispute. Don't get me wrong, I love it to death (better than the original in my opinion), but it's hard to disagree with the assertion that it kind of breaks the album's flow. Definitely a minor, minor problem though which is outshined by a multitude of fantastic moments in the song alone, not to mention the rest of the record.

Haha, there's a riff on spirit crucher that Chuck Schuldiner took off from the first Martyr record, Hopeless Hopes. Listen to Inner Peace and you will see.
