Instrumentally, the album is above excellence. Where it is awfully unbearable is the vocals. Tracks like David and Repression & Resistance would be so much cooler with a different singer.

They didn't really find themselves until A Sense of Change and Sophisticated is easily their most underrated and best album overall. The fact that few can see how liberally bands like PtH take influence from Sophisticated is absurd.

Yeah this is blatantly plagiarized. I looked into it and pretty much all the stuff that sounds similar to Watchtower's was available on Watchtower's existing demo tapes and even bootlegged live shows by that point. There are also Heathen and Testament riffs in there.

their 1985 debut, though considerably more obscure than after jarzombie joined the band for control and resistance, opened the path for so much prog metal, tech metal, bands like atheist and death (90s era) etc

but yea the vocals are easily the weakest thing about that band as a whole, though they dont bother me anywhere as much as they used to
