like i said, comparison is one thing, but the majority/basis of a review should be the piece of music as a separate entity. this whole review is almost as much (or more) about yeezus than it is run the jewels.

i'm bored of only discussing records as singular entities. it means nothing to me unless it's placed in the context of culture or other contemporaries.

But I think that when Yeezus is the most discussed hip-hop album of the year thus far, it's very relevant for a review in the genre, y'know? I do get what you're saying, but I think Sobhi does a really good job of articulating why Kanye would even be brought up in such a review-- what comes to mind for me is his analysis of lyrics in the final paragraph.

On a side note, this is a great album to go running to.

the meta discussion is more interesting anyway. it's not like this review (being on this website) is going to be the go-to review for somebody whose never heard el-p or killer mike before. going into this record, most had a reasonable idea what it was going to entail, and if we didn't because we hadn't listened to these two before, the direct comparison throughout to an album that every hip-hop listener has heard this year (because we are sheep) is probably the most ideal way to compare an album.

There are only so many ways you can describe beats and aesthetics before you've written/read it all before.

I think I overplayed this album too much. I tried for the 7th time and just got bored towards the end not because it's bad but because I've been playing it too much. Think I'll let it cool off for a week.
