Change, it happens everywhere, either in your life, movements or anything around you. The main thing here is music and the band analysed here are the funky rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you like rock music then no doubt you have heard these guys and reviewing this is hard to give a rating as while it is a good album, it certainly isn’t to the Chili’s ordinary standards. Maybe it’s because it is so different than the others that it is hard to give a biased rating on it. It’s like marmite, you either love it or hate it. One thing that fans hated about it is that popular Chili guitarist John Frusciante had left to battle his personal demons and was replaced by Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. The difference between the guitarists is easy to decipher as Dave is more of a lead player and he is a great guitarist but he doesn’t really fit into the group. John was more a funk and melodic player in which he definitely fits into the band. It seems a bit sad that these songs were left in the dark and it also seems they are just forgotten about by them. These songs were never played live and John hasn’t even heard the album which is quite weird.
This album is hard to describe but it is just pretty weird. They are times that make you go “what the f—k is this?" It is just really that different and I also noticed that some of the songs have no structure, it is pretty out there. The only success the album really had was the song My Friends which is quite a pretty track. It is a type of acoustic ballad which seems like it’s about the downfall of a few friends, it then just breaks into this inappropriate solo. The album also had success with Aeroplane which is a pretty annoying song in my opinion. It doesn’t sound good at all. One of the worst songs ever is the filler Pea which is some annoying song Flea does and the language in the song is irrelevant. The songs always change suddenly which means you can’t predict the whole song by just listening to one hot minute (pun ++). For a good example of this is One Big Mob which is a funky fun track and then the tempo just drops into this really gloomy part. It is a bit annoying unless you are really high which the atmosphere the album can have is basically. Another great example of this is Deep Kick which is Anthony just talking, it’s a story of when he was young and out on his own. This goes on for what seems like ages until it just goes funky all of a sudden. It is actually pretty annoying and makes the album feel like it just drags on which sadly it does. It drags on and on and they could have easily just cut a few songs out.
The solos suit the song, yeah you read that right. The album has solos since Dave is a lead player and it is filled with wah to make it really funky. Anthony seems to change his voice all the time throughout the album, he uses his traditional voice but then he sounds like his voice on the track was manually slowed down. That is where the dragging comes in here. The drums do have some nice beats, nothing too hard but fun and time-keeping. Flea is an incredible bassist, he always plays his own lines and he also has a few bass solos. He is a main part of the band and he has incredible talent. He is one of the best bassists in the rock scene today. My favourite song is Coffee Shop which starts with some clean guitar and bass until it turns into a cool smooth funk-fest and it has a catchy as hell chorus. “Meet me at the coffee shop, we can dance like Iggy Pop" sings Keidis in the chorus. This also has a bass solo in it and it is a real highlight for the album. I think this is a more complete song and isn’t thrown together. This album isn’t bad but it sure drags like hell. If you weren’t paying attention then this album would just blend together but it is a good listen at times but don’t expect your normal Chili’s as this is the strangest, weirdest album in their discography.

Nice review. I love Frusciante, so chances are I won't get buy this album, especially since I hate when albums drag. The only song I recognize on the track listing is Aeroplane, and yeah, it's annoying. Very annoying.
| | | What's with the neg vote?
| | | I also noticed I got negged again, I'm guessing people are just basing the review on it's length than it's actual content. How sad.
| | | good review del, i don't care much for this either.
| | | Good Review, got my vote.
This is one of the few chili peppers albums i haven't heard entirely. I've heard Aeroplane and My Friends and both are good though.

Mmmmm.... Just like Marmite, I have to say, I DO like this album, whilst yes it is easy to say it's not 'par the Chili course' I don't think it should be easily knocked. I still think it's worth a try. Coffee Shop is great, a definate standout, but my personal favourite is the emotional ballad, 'Tearjerker' written shortly after the 'death' of Kurt Cobain. If only at least, these two songs are worth a try.
....But theres not too much wrong with the rest of the album either.

Definitely one of the best mainstream albums RHCP have made yet at the same time, this is also their most under-appreciated album. I don't get why many people are bashing "Aeroplane", it's my favourite song on One Hot Minute for being the most unique of the bunch. Also, Dave Navarro seems like an average guitarist to me, but he really stands out on One Hot Minute.

I have to agree with all the above.

I agree. This album isnt one of their strongest albums by far. I liked Aeroplane though. ...........and Flea is the greastest bassist ever!!!!!!!!!
| | | well, being that the chilli peppers are my favorite band....i love all their albums, but I agree that this isnt one of their strongest albums, although flea shines more on this album due to the fact that frusciante isnt the guitarist. he alot of the time plays the melodic lines, and does an awesome solo on aeroplane. how do u guys find it annoying, its extremely funky...which is awesome. Great bass by flea.

I actually enjoyed this review more then any of your past reviews. You kept things short and very detailed and I think you spent more time on this then past reviews.
I really enjoy 'Aeroplane' and 'My Friends' but other then that this doesn't do it for me. I agree with you for the most part, but I'd rate this album a lot lower because it contains so many weak tracks.

The only excellent songs on this are My Friends, Coffee Shop, and Tearjerker. I can't help, but notice the voids that is album has all over the place.

Dude - what? SHALLOW BE THY GAME
Digging: Dinosaur Jr. - Farm | | | What the hell is with you referring to Navarro as a lead player? Its not like John Frusciante never solos. It sounds like you're trying to make Frusciante into a Johnny Marr type guitarist.
Oh and Pea rules.
