gwynbleidd: fair points. what's odd to me is how many genres mbdtf throws at the wall without
ever coming across as pretentious or overstuffed. that album i can happily concede is revolutionary
without ever compromising accessibility. it's so weird that something as emotionally raw as blame
game could be on the same album as something as tribal and upbeat as lost in the world, or something
as loungy and seductive as devil in a new dress, and yet it all works amazingly well together.

I think it partly has to do with what I mentioned about him pouring himself into it. Mbdtf is
clearly a much more personal and meaningful album from any way you can look at it, this feels more
like a collection of songs, hell he even said that he didn't have a marketing, a real objective, or
"shit, we don't even have a cover". They just wanted to go out there and make some music.

So, I guess we can, all in all, blame the points on him not being that emotionally engaged by this
than before, which I'd say makes sense.

for the record, i don't find this incredibly difficult to get into (although it's pretty far
from enjoyable to me because of how aggressively challenging it tries to be), i'm more so saying
it's difficult when compared to his other stuff, and considering the general expectations of his
fans.

Oh I understood what you meant, I meant in the sense that I couldn't see how this was ALL THAT more
difficult than his other stuff, at least in mbdtf. This is, overall, his least accessible, though, I
can agree with that.

You have to be kidding yourself to think that dark fantasy wasn't pretentious. But unlike on here, kanye genuinely felt like he had something to prove and acted upon that as evidenced by runaway and the 2nd song on the album. This one is easy to dislike because its so painfully obvious that doesn't care and it really really shows at times.

i find this far less accessible than anything else of his. i imagine the traditional hip hop fan sitting down to listen to this for the first time and being like "what in the actual fuck" when on sight's beat kicks in. all of it is so unorthodox and almost difficult to listen to (at first anyways) that it's easy to understand why so many people can't get into it. in a way tho it's pretty obvious that he did this to GET that reaction (clip in on sight "he'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want") because he's tired of being shit on by journalists always trying to degrade him while also wanting to put out something different. and i can appreciate the statement he's making, because i bet when he showed this to Def Jam for the first time they probably hated it. did they do anything about it tho? hell nah because it's kanye

Lakes, it probably does seem less exhausting because this one is a lot more minimalist by nature which is the exact opposite of dark fantasy's nature.

those screams at the end are so awkward and ill placed, lol. entire album is so nonsensical, it's

almost endearing.

Definitely a really incredibly catchy album, but Kanye's lyricism really seemed to suffer. Most of the album it feels like he's rapping about, well, nothing. A little disappointed after the fantastic verses on MBDTF. But nonetheless, it's an enjoyable listen
