"But the best thing that Sunbather has managed is finding a way to make a hopeful shoegaze/death metal album."

It is more melodic than most death metal out there and frankly I get that vibe from it. I don't really care for genre tags personally and I can see where death metal diehards would argue against this album fitting into that rigid framework. I care more about the massive walls of sound that are created and what they mean to myself. It is understandable why others would not enjoy Sunbather and that is perfectly fine. Hence why music is an awesome art form.

The speed at which many of the songs are played has a feel of death metal. It combines many genres at the same time, but there are elements of the genre thrown in. It's more shoe gaze and hardcore punk though. As far as a larger genre to latch onto, it feels closer to death than any other form personally. But like I stated before, the sound means more than the tagging.

It reminds me of how people who don't listen to metal think anything that sounds harsh with harsh vocals is death metal.

I know genres shouldn't matter that much, but this is shoegaze/black metal with a bit of post rock thrown in there. In no way, is it death metal.

This has nothing to do with hardcore punk, either. "it sounds like Envy, tho!!!" is not a valid argument in that regard.

Probably because the twinkly trademarks outweigh the metal trademarks.
