But the music sounds like just that - happy black metal, haha

athom sums it up nicely:

Its dark core of nihilistic rage is masked in the haze and warmth of our own exteriors, our own masks, yearning to not only feel the sunlight on our untouched skin, but to let it sink in and warm the heart which we fear the most. It is beautiful anguish.

i feel like it is true that deafheaven's music is best understood from the subject position you were talking about in that write-up. their 2010 demo did for me what sunbather seems to have done for you. i listened to that thing obsessively. idk if i'm sinply not in the same mental space now that i was in early 2011, but this record doesn't touch me like that, with the exception of the title track and the closer.

doesn't help I generally don't listen to this style anyway, but I don't think I'll ever be able to interpret this the way others seem to

i know this isnt really black metal though so dont FREAK OUT

hell i hardly hear any metal in it at all tbh and that's not just me trying to be elitist. i mean it's there but not prominent enough for this to be considered a metal record in my eyes. not that it really matters
