I really need some new music from this band, hope they announce more about their new album soon.

I hope so. The side-project from the singer and whoever (can't remember the name) didn't do a whole lot more than make me want to new National.

"Why is daddy shouting?"
They're closing in on 50, no more screaming for Mr Berninger lest he start resembling the king of incontinence Ozzy Osbourne.
I'll agree they need to up the tempo more often on their new material though

It wasn't like a rain, it was more like a sea
I didn't ask for this pain, it just came over me

Slipped and Heavenfaced are tops on this for me. Throw in Graceless and Pink Rabbets as well...fuck it, this whole record is Godly.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks "Heavenfaced" is a highlight. In fact it's my favorite on here, top 10 National imo

How is "Heavenfaced" better than "Pink Rabbits", "Slipped", "Humiliation", "I Should Live In Salt", "Don't Swallow the Cap", "This Is the Last Time" etc.?
I mean it's an excellent song and I love this album to death but that song is top 30 National at best and easily one of the weakest here imo.

harsh talk from softieking
i agree though on heavenfaced being one of the weaker tracks here

"Pink Rabbits" and "This Is the Last Time" are close behind, I'll admit. I guess there's just something really satisfying about the piano melody and the climax in "Heavenfaced" that puts it a tiny notch above the other highlights for me.

I just find both the vocal melody and lyrics relatively weak for a National song, again I do really like it but at the end of the day it's likely my least favorite here.

I thought no one rated the 'griever', 'believe her', 'freezer' rhyme in the climax of Heavenfaced
It seems a bit like they struggled with finding something better to put there
First half of the song is great though

yeah the first half of the song is really great with a beautiful melody and great lyrics but it gets pretty boring in the 2nd half

Even with growing on me a lot since I've first heard it, I still think Heavenfaced is easily the worst song in their 4 album run. Still like a 3.75 tho

There are a few weaker songs on Alligator imo

I just think the lyrics are uncharacteristically weak and I can't stand his singing at the end of the song for whatever reason, I think it's cheesy and lame
Has anybody heard the live snippet of their new song Turtleneck? It was deeply confusing to me lol

I can understand why someone wouldn't be too big a fan of the back half of "Heavenfaced" but I can't help but love it.
Preliminary Top 10 National songs (noting that I've only heard their full LPs from Sad Songs to this:
1. "Lucky You"
2. "Racing like a Pro"
3. "Mr. November"
4. "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks"
5. "Little Faith"
6. "City Middle"
7. "Slow Show"
8. "Heavenfaced"
9. "Pink Rabbits"
10. (tie) "All the Wine"
10. (tie) "Afraid of Everyone"

Hmm that's definitely pretty different from what mine would be.
Also trust me you won't find any top 10 songs on their debut so worry not.
