For some reason I've never been enamored with Alligator the way many fans of the band are. That may be

due to High Violet being my introduction to them, but it's always been my least favorite of the last

four.

I used to feel the same about alligator but repeated listens made me love it more, even the first half

I think most of sputnik's National fans were introduced to the band through HV maybe that explains its unreasonably high (I think) reputation around here
correct me if I'm wrong but I'm willing to bet most of these 5s were the first time the user heard the band*

*not that that's bad or anything
I'm more sympathetic to that

@SeaAnemone As mentioned before, my introduction to the band was High Violet, but having listened to the other records numerous times since I believe that, irregardless of my first impression of the band, High Violet has their best songwriting and is their artistic peak (thus far). Of course, my perspective is probably skewed given the circumstances.

It's hard to backtrack though. I understand what SeaAnemone is saying because it's completely true. Whatever album you hear first is likely to have the largest impact. Sure you can go back and listen to the whole discography 1000+ times, but unless one of those other albums is unequivocally better, then the first impression album will take top prize over anything else that's relatively close by comparison...and for the National, all their albums are relatively close - so it makes sense to like whatever you've heard first.
