that's odd, considering "classic spazzy Dillinger" is based on weird time signatures. did you mean polyrhythmic exploration? because that's also not too interesting here. this is easily dillinger's least technical album, and for a technical metal band that translates directly to their worst album.

To be honest it's not like it's impossible for them to make a not very technical but still great album, but this isn't it

"it might sound spazzy but it mostly ends up as 4/4."
um who cares. still sounds like raw spazzy awesome Dillinger to me. why would you actually only listen to music like this if it actually changes time signatures all the time? that seems kind of shallow and pointless

beyond the technicality, this still isn't as good as previous works

this is a technical metal band. their gimmick is that they are technical in a rhythmic manner. they have built a career upon making rhythmically technical songs.
on this album, they moved away from this, and the end result was negative. many groups can make drastic changes to their sound and attain a positive result. this is not one of those cases.

tbh half the fun of listening to dillinger tracks is figuring out the time sigs and how it all works. this album in the context of their career is like doing 1000 piece where's waldo jigsaws and then being handed this: http://i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v1/1515438965_1/Fashion-Wooden-Rabbit-font-b-Puzzle-b-font-Educational-Developmental-Baby-Kids-Training-Toy-Freeshipping-wholesale.jpg

this is not just a "technical metal" band, this is a band that transcends pointless genre restrictions like that one. if their "gimmick" has to be restricted to "technical in a rhythmic manner," how do you explain Unretrofied, Black Bubblegum, Milk Lizard, Gold Teeth On A Bum, Parasitic Twins, Nothing's Funny, etc.? They're a band that does whatever the hell they want, no matter the genre, or "gimmick," as you call it. And that's why they're so awesome.

i'll cede that i am bad at communication though. iamamanfromspace summed it up pretty well: To be honest it's not like it's impossible for them to make a not very technical but still great album, but this isn't it

lol they're one of my favorite bands and i've never done that. and i really don't think the band wants me to. they use very calculated song structures to articulate very visceral and un-calculated emotions. it's a beautiful contradiction.

i mean my gripe with the album isn't just that it isn't technical; it's that it's boring as shit, and dangerously close to your typical Sumerian-core. I would have no problem with a non-technical dillinger album, but they have proven here that they don't know how to write good non-technical music.
