i'm not spiteful Lakes is just silly. I disagree with you guys about what music reviewing can and should be, I guess that's the bottom line. I think this "review" is brilliant.

the rating isn't the issue here people, why are you focusing on that? Ideally this review wouldn't have a score at all.

not that there's anything wrong with that, it just reeks of pretension. gotcha.

yes, it is a personal piece, and a really well-argued one at that.

i think what this review helps demonstrate is that ratings are actually really arbitrary. i definitely agree with ali that we should have the choice to review an album without a rating - it gives people a reason to actually read the review to find out whether or not it's for them, as opposed to looking at the rating and downloading based off that.

Different types of reviews work. I understand where all of you guys are coming from

Aids, I guess I'm just curious why you'd have such a negative response to Lakes' post. I really enjoy the review, but there are a couple qualities about it that feel a bit, to use one of his words, "pretentious." The main one is the multiple scores, but Lucidity did mention that had to do more with how reviews work on the site.

And I guess I'm confused about why you've been much more bitter on Sput lately! I love you, man, but it seems like you get worked up over this kinda thing pretty damn easily these days

Just saying that lakes' response is understandable.

Read: I'm not saying this is a pretentious review

I promise

I'm still confused. You did like it, though? If you were affected and amazed by it, don't you think that should be a reason for a solid straightforward high rating? And is your 1.5 rating what you truly feel? Do you really think this supposed negative attribute is actually negative in your eyes? Or is it the result of how others see flaws about the album?

If you like it to a great extent to give it a 4.5 then give it that rating only. Don't succumb to what you feel people regard as "negative attributes".

The underlying commentary in this review is that ratings are kind of meaningless. That with some albums, a flat numerical rating just can't capture our reaction to the music. I knew some people would harp on the ratings here, so I'm not bothered by this response. As I said before, I view this review as ratingless, but I couldn't present it as such.

@omaha - it's because it seems like increasingly the interesting and thought-provoking conversation has left sputnik, and in its place we have these one word responses and people that didn't actually read anything past the summary. Lakes is one particular offender in that category, so I called him out. I'm not trying to have this bitter tone here, honestly, I just think that people see a long and emotional post and misread that as hostility. I love discussing music, and most people here, like 95% of the users, don't do anything past "yeah" "agree" "pos" etc. So I guess compared to that, yeah I seem angry and bitter. But I'm neither, I just like discussing things passionately and intelligently, and not many people are that interested in doing that here lately. So when Ali posts something like this and Lakes says something like that (without backing it up) I asserted my opinion. Read that as "angry" if you want, but I promise I'm not at all.

p.s. one love. even you lakes, even you.

I mean, Ali raises a really, really good point here, and none of us (myself included) are discussing it at all. That's what sputnik is like these days, and that's why I'm such a silly ol grump.

Adrian, people will take your posts as angry when you say things like

you are the worst.

this is a great piece of writing and god damn lakes you suck for not getting that.

Like, I understand the reasoning completely, but aren't these pretty douchey things to say? I don't understand why you can't just learn to embrace that Sputnik has its fair share of silly comments. It's frustrating, yeah, but it's nothing to lose your cool over.. And it's in statements like this where you really do sound pissed off

"it's undoubtedly well-written but it's more of a personal piece than anything else. not that there's anything wrong with that, but yeah"

haha then what is the point of this post if there's nothing wrong with that

im totally cool with non-review-ish "personal" reviews posted here--it's not like a) we have a dearth of more conventional reviews on this site or b) there is a limited amount of space and these deviating pieces are "taking that up" or w/e

lakes, I don't understand what what you said has to do with my point. This isn't a review as such, and it's been written years after the album was released. It's an interesting "article" if you will, about the subjectivity of music enjoyment, and the interesting way that people can love/hate certain pieces for exactly the same reasons. It's just a nice piece of writing, and it's presented as a 1.5/4.5 review for a Panda Bear album. Did you read it?

@omaha - chill, it's just sputnik. People say "you are the worst" to Lakes, and many, many others, all the time. i'm not entirely serious. lakes love the Mountain Goats so therefore I love him. it's whatever, it's sputnik. people misread and overreact when I say things like that. Obviously I don't actually think he is the worst, that would be skeletor tee hee

plus, this album's already been discussed to death, so i don't see how the personal angle is a bad thing.
