Some obvious early Pink Floyd influences beyond the cover of Cymbaline. Some parts sound like Careful with That Axe Eugene. They did not have a musician as the same caliber as Rick Wright yet, but Dave Brock already had over 5 years of busking experience and his skill as a rhythm guitarist are apparent on this release. Terry’s drumming is excellent and creates a nice foundation. Hugh’s chops are not apparent on this release but he would prove to be an outstanding lead guitarist in the following years –though his stint with Hawkwind would be interrupted for almost 9 years partially due to a bad acid trip at the Isle of Wight Festival (he was tabbed unknowingly) in August, 1970. Two songs and the rest are essentially extended 2 to 3 chord jams. Nik Turner could not really play sax or flute in any conventional way, but he did have an ear for adding trippy color to the songs. DikMik and his “electronic sound generators” was just getting going and would really develop some distinction in the following 2 years.

I like the album and though it may not have achieved total lift-off -it did get the ball rolling nicely. The mold was set for the spacy jams and participation from the underground artist that would shortly follow this album’s release.

I might bump this up to a 3.0. It's quite underrated.

Some of the band members claim this was the best album they did iirc.

This band's had enough members over its run to account for half the state of Nebraska, so that's not saying that much.

They still ain't all that wrong though
