Probably my second favorite album from them. I'd even give this a 4 if not for a few weaker tracks.

Chapter VII. That album doesn't get nearly enough love.

This isn't too shabby. The vocalist is quite good.

My brother and I agree that vocally this is the best album. It has the enthusiasm of the early work with the maturity of the later stuff.

Were these guys lumped in the nu metal scene back in the day? That's the only reason I can come up for never checking them out.

Yeah, they were. And then Alternative metal.

The reality of their sound is don't look for overly complicated techydeath/freejazz material, because that isn't who they are. They make music with strong hooks and alternatingly okay/bad/amazing verses.

I'd say check Home and Sevendust. Most will agree those are the strongest. Many people love Animosity, but Animosity has some shortcomings.

I love Animosity and Seasons both a lot

Will do. I have known the band's name for years, but never had any interest in them. I think I assumed they were like a rap/rock thing or something, similar to the likes of Papa Roach, POD and Linkin Park back in the nu metal days.

nah much heavier and angrier in places and much more melodic than all those bands

Nah, they have always had a legit metal edge and are more adult in their lyricism (albeit they still write from generalized perspective).

The only song in their catalogue that can be categorized as rap-rock is "Face to Face"

@chuck I didn't say I didn't like it, just that the first two are their crowning achievements.

agreed with lioness, while I said that objectively this is their best album musically, the self-titled record and Home are my favorites. Songs like Bitch, Black, My Ruin, Denial, etc are all at the top of the Alternative Metal genre IMO

Midway through first listen, and I'm seriously impressed. Not sure I am hearing 4.5 quality, but I agree it might be their best album. Tough to beat Animosity....

Too much nostalgia with Animosity to like this more, but this is better
