Gorguts debut is not particularly innovative like their later releases, but it's still a solid slab of old school death metal.

It's clear that this Canadian band was heavily influenced by the Florida scene and took inspiration from bands like Death and Obituary. On top of this you have Dan Seagrave album art, Scott Burns production, Chris Barnes on backing vocals, and a James Murphy guest solo. I mean is this Florida? No...? What sets this album apart from other Florida bands are the early hints of technicality, heavy bass work, dissonant riffing, and the brooding atmosphere.

The first half of the album is definitely the strongest, with the highlights being Disincarnated, Rottenatomy, and Stiff And Cold. The last song of the album, Inoculated Life, is also excellent due in part to the James Murphy solo.

This is easily Gorguts's weakest release, but still a great listen.

Top 10 1991.
