I wasn't a huge fan of GFD tbh but I found it more interesting than a lot of recent PT albums even if it did drag somewhat.

That's my exact thought, Jamie.

it would've been perfect if it didn't have the messy Raider II

The ideas present in his solo material seem a lot more interesting than on any of the last 5 PT albums that's for sure.

PT's early work just feels more complete and doesn't drag like some of their recent material.

The best parts of this album are Theo Travi's flute/sax sections. That guy is the even greater than Ian Anderson.

Wilson worships The Bends and Pink Floyd and King Crimson and plenty other prog acts I have never heard of. I don't really mind it, though.

This is still an impressive homage to 70s prog. Because, unfortunately, not much in 2013 has sounded very good, excluding a few good albums.

Great review, but nevertheless a bit long. I agree on most of the things you've mentioned and I've only heard the album once but repetitive listening will be followed that's for sure.

"The songs themselves are very engaging, but that kind of instant transparency will only be known by fans of progressive rock."
Indeed, only true lovers of the genre can understand and absorb what Wilson does here. And in all honest I'm glad for being able to enjoy such an album
