Also, I count 17 "real tracks", what aren't you counting as real other than the first track on Ascension?

Weeeelll, I don't care much for "Subtraction", either, because it's way too obviously a Prize Fighter Inferno song for my tastes, so it hurts the flow of the album for me. However... Eh, whether you like it or not, it's a real song. So, I'd say, eh, it's two albums.

I don't like albums to be too long, really, and this way, it doesn't feel like you're slogging through too much. Split down the middle, nice intermission.

I agree that the double album was pointless; if the best songs had all been released in one, and then maybe a b-sides compilation for the other songs, then it'd be in their top 3

Yep, great point Iluvatar. I have no interest whatsoever in this concept, but if the music was actually good and not some watered down, half-assed form of pretentious progressive rock I might take notice.

I've never really considered Coheed prog (apart from the songs that obviously are (Domino, Willing Well, IKSSE etc); for me they're just a different kind of rock band

@Cutman: A lot more than I see 8 real tracks on 1 album. Scary Kids Scaring Kids Raekwon Tim McGraw Z-Ro Outkast and many others throughout every genre. Some of those do indeed run 80 minutes on a disc.

Lol, I guess it's a damn sight easier saying 'prog' than 'alt-rock-metal-progressive-emo-whatever'

Rock n Roll. Then if you want just add a footnote that says, sounds similar to Rush.

There you go.

I dont believe in justifying a bands genre anymore. It doesn't really matter.

We're comparing how they released their double album, not the bands.

Hm. If I edited it down to JUST the tracks I think are best- excluding also the ones I think are just okay or good- it would look like...

1. "The Hollow"

2. "Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute"

3. "The Afterman"

4. "Mothers of Men "

5. "Goodnight, Fair Lady"

6. "Key Entity Extraction II: Holly Wood the Cracked"

7. "Key Entity Extraction III: Vic the Butcher"

8. "Key Entity Extraction IV: Evagria the Faithful"

9. "Key Entity Extraction V: Sentry the Defiant"

10. "The Hard Sell"

11. "Number City"

12. "Gravity's Union"

13. "Dark Side Of Me"

And "Dark Side Of Me" would even end the concept perfectly, what with the outro having the computer ask him why he did all of that, "Is this what love is?", and the album could just end on him saying "...Yes..."
