I really dig the first half of this when they come up with some great riffs and really sound like an alt rock band from the 1990s. The 2nd half is less alluring for me.
Following excellent debut LP 'The Big Roar', Welsh alt-rockers The Joy Formidable look to build upon their arena-rock aesthetic with 2nd LP 'Wolf's Law'. Tighter - and more accessible - than the debut, this album isn't necessarily better off for that fact, with the band's ambition not always honed appropriately. Some string arrangements add value & the trio somehow pull off the bombastic Muse-like ridiculousness of 'Maw Maw Song', but a few too many tracks float on by satisfyingly without leaving any great imprint. In other words: this is solid , but TJF are capable of much better. Recommended Tracks: This Ladder Is Ours, Maw Maw Song, The Hurdle & Cholla.
