The secret to Carlos' success (aside from raw, natural talent and creativity, obviously) on the bass is that he didn't play the bass. He is not a bassist and literally hasn't touched a bass since quitting the band (in his own admittance in a recent-ish great interview on YT). He grew up a metalhead, and shredding on guitar was his thing.
He never intended to play the bass. Daniel (the actual heart of the band, sorry not sorry, lads) had a cheap, shitty old bass at his apartment and Carlos' had the look of an artist. Daniel asked him to join and Carlos started fuckin around on the bass to find his style. He played the bass similarly to Billy Sheehan, insofar as he essentially treated it like a low frequency guitar. Carlos attacks the bass melodically, and was never fond of it as an instrument. This is really what makes him so distinct as a bass player. People miss him because now Interpol is actually playing the bass like a bass guitar.

Considering reviewing this record. My copy comes with the rerecorded Song Seven as the closer to the record. With that track as a closer this album is a borderline 5 for me. Might just have to get around to writing that...

cool input. Nemeton. That explains a lot X) the bass is really distinctive for sure and mainly this first two records.

Someone should make band where they play the guitar like a bass, the bass like the drums, the drums like the voice, and the voice like a guitar. And add a mellotron just to see what happens.

This rules, almost as much as TOTBL. In fact this is slightly more consistent than that though the highs here are lower.

TOTBL is one of the most consistent albums I've ever lent my ears on

TOTBL is extremely consistent except for the random massive dip in quality that is “Hands Away”-“Obstacle 2”.
