First listen I kind of enjoyed quite a few songs but thought very little stuck out. I listened to it more and a few of the songs grabbed my attention much more. I disagree about most of the ballads being dull, I think there's some really good ones on here. I do agree much of the lyrics are immature and get sickening. Talk about something other than relationships, and very immature ones by the sound of it. Songs like 22 are cringe-worthy for sure (although I think it has a very catchy chorus) and if the album was full of them it would be a terrible album.
I think these are all solid songs (with some being very good):
State of Grace
Red
I Almost Do
All Too Well
Begin Again
The Lucky One
The Last Time (I do not like Gary's voice but together they sound pretty good)
Treacherous
Sad Beautiful Tragic

The fact is this: her style of music was just fine. People will listen to that way-overdone-but-catchy-as-hell blend of pop and country in droves until the apocalypse.
She didn't need to change her music style to mature. She just needs to actually mature.

The problem is that when you're as old as she is, you gotta have some depth...both lyrically and musically speaking. And she has neither on this album. She's either making totally uninspired attempts at rehashing her (by now) all-too-familar sound, or she's trying a "fresh" approach by ditching her country-ness and going purely pop...which might be fine except for the fact that so many other artists do "purely pop" much, much better than she does here. It's just plain bad--conflicting sounds mixed with weak songwriting and her cheesy immaturity pushed to the point of being a gimmick. Really falls flat.

most of this is actually the exact album I was hoping she wouldn't end up writing
her country-ness was barely audible to begin with, many country singers question her country "label", and I always hated her first album so I'm not going to miss the country in her at all
I'm just wonder how you can be pure pop AND be a gimmick
that word seems to imply something that just isn't inherently good, rather than deviating from the norm with a cheap extra trick
