Is the issue with Real that it's cornball? I like that attribute about it, definitely earned in context. These are characters in a narrative searching for validation (be it love or success), but Kendrick offers a new direction: self-worth. ("What does love got to do with it if you don't love yourself?") In that light, why not direct lyrics so bluntly? Don't we all long to feel emotions as simple and powerful as the ones expressed, "with my hands in the air I am proud to say / yeah i'm real, I'm real, I'm really really real"?

I also just love the beat and pacing but this album is powerful for the connections between presentation and intent. Great lyrics and skits on this one.

Poetic Justice is good but I still struggle with this album--and that's why it's fun!--with that question: does it fit in the "narrative" (this album seems to have something looser than narrative but still -there-, whatever it is)? If so, where? Does it need to?

Idk, haven't listened to this album straight through in a while--might do that tonight.
