"Suite Sister" and "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" are probably my favorite two tracks of 1988.

I personally would take "Blood Fire Death" over the other Viking epic on Blood Fire Death.

i take suite sister mary over both [2]. I seriously think "Suite Sister" represents all the best elements of Queensryche, especially the collective vocal performance. As much as a love LaTorre, he has a large challenge ahead of him doing a vocal performance to be mentioned in the same sentence as many on this album as well as the Warning and Rage.

I like how this guy says in the first line of his review that Queensryche are a joke. Fact is, they have always been a joke. The band even made a follow-up to this album because it's the only thing their dweeby fans care about in their discography.
I laugh when I see this band is labelled under progressive metal. I wonder which delusional sputnik punk did that? Every time I see a prog label on sputnikmusic I question whether the person has even listened to the album.
Operation: Mindcrime is as far from progressive metal as Rush's Moving Pictures is from progressive rock. The music here is simplistic pop metal that you would hear in your local bar. This shit is on the same level as Poison or Motley Crue. If you don't hear the glam on Anarchy-X or the first riff of Revolution Calling you are deaf and dumb. 'REVOULTION CALLING, REVOOOOLUTION CALLING YOU !!!'
So What exactly makes this album progressive? The concept? Give me a break. Conceptual lyrics do not make an album progressive and the whole 'the government is evil' has been done a dozen times. Geoff Tate sounds like a pompous, washed up glam vocalist doing a bad Dickinson impersonation. His vocal performance is atrocious, especially on the title track, Speak, and I Don't Believe In Love.
Mindcrime has a weak concept, awful hooks, sugary-sweet melodies, horrid lyrics ('I DON'T BELIEVE IN LOVE! IT'S NEVER WORTH THE PAIN YOU FEEL... OHHHH' 'NO TIME FOR LOOOOOOOOVE!'), and cheesy glam metal riffing. It's just dull music.
If your looking for both a progressive and a masterpiece of a concept album, check out 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' by Genesis. If you are looking a genius prog metal album, check Nothingface by Voivod.
Avoid this hair metal puke at all costs.

Check other albums and keep in mind that pioneers doesn't imply a large amount of prog metal everywhere.
