Great review, excellent album. I never had a doubt in Darnielle. Seeing them sometime in
October...excited, holy shit

Pianotuna, you're lucky. These guys have a huge discography, and a lot of it isn't even in the sputnik database. Definitely listen to Tallahassee and All Hail West Texas.

Ugh god I don't get it. I absolutely LOVE The Mountain Goats and to be honest I think this album is kind of an outright failure. Biggest disappointment of this year for me.

5'ing this because I've been waiting unbearably long for this album and it lived up to all of my expectations and then some.
The title track is unbelievable.

(tentative) top 10 Mountain Goats albums (not including EPs or Comps) cause why not:

The Coroner's Gambit
Tallahassee
The Sunset Tree
All Hail West Texas
We Shall All Be Healed
Transcendental Youth
Hail and Farewell Gothenburg
All Eternals Deck
Full Force Galesburg
tie: Heretic Pride/Nothing For Juice

get Tallahassee and We Shall All Be Healed and you're probably set for what he'll be playing live.

he usually throws in some stuff from Get Lonely and The Life of the World to Come but meh, focus on the "big 5" and the two new ones.
