Reads better but the original sentence is not run-on. Commas can be placed within quotations btw unless you live in United Kingdom. I will add a question mark.

I know they can but that's the run-on part. You finished your idea at the end of the quotation and everything after it is a whole new idea which should get its own sentence. But what do I know I'm a science major..I'm not trained to write so much goodly
